A Creation Liturgy

// Mosaic have wanted to have a weekend away together for a while now and a couple of weekends ago we finally managed to do so by camping together in the beautiful Hampshire countryside. And yes, the weather was on our side!

As part of our time together we headed into the woods on Sunday morning to engage in a “Creation Liturgy” I had pulled together, which I thought I would post here in case it’s of help to anyone. I can’t claim any originality as I drew from a couple of fantastic Proost resources heavily. Maybe the only claim I can make is to the “original” way I drew the bits together! Children and adults alike seemed to respond to it though.

Wish I’d taken some pictures though!

Anyway, here it is. Parts in bold are spoken together.

 // A Creation Liturgy

In the name of God the Creator of all. Amen.

We meet in the name of the Creator, and of the Redeemer,
 and of the Companion. Amen

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

In the beginning, God created. In the beginning, God.

In the beginning, God made us from the clay upon the new earth.

In the beginning, God created. In the beginning, God.

In the beginning, God looked at his creation and saw that it was good.

In the beginning, God created.
In the beginning, God.

In our beginnings and endings, may we know the presence of the creative God.

In the beginning, God created. In the beginning, God. Amen.

[Pause for Reflection]

Confession

We remember the past week and what we have done, offering it to the Creator God, in trust that he can make all things new.

[Pause for Reflection]

Lord God,
 from the great swirl
of atoms and planets
you made the earth we stand on. You brought light from darkness. You made us from
the very dust of the ground.

We thank you for creation. We praise you for life.

May we who are
made in Your image
also be creative in our lives, our worship,
 and in our community.
May we look at them and know that they are good.

We thank you for creation. We praise you for life. Amen.

Kids prayer

‘First prayers’ p14

Activity 1: STICKS

[We made a den with sticks from the forest. The kids then sat in it whilst we read the passage]

Reading: Ephesians 2:20-22

“God is building a home. He’s using us all—irrespective of how we got here—in what he is building. He used the apostles and prophets for the foundation. Now he’s using you, fitting you in brick by brick, stone by stone, with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone that holds all the parts together. We see it taking shape day after day—a holy temple built by God, all of us built into it, a temple in which God is quite at home.”

Jesus, please make your home in us. Amen.

 Activity 2: STONES

[We went hunting for a couple of stones each – mostly knobbly flint ones in the area we were staying]

Take a stone in your hand, look at it, turn it around, feel its surface – its shape, its texture, its colour, its bruises and cracks, its worn edges… can you imagine its story, the journey it has been on, the secrets it holds. How has it come to your hand?

Now turn to yourself, what has your journey been, what have been the things that have shaped you, that have brought you to this moment; the joys, the struggles, the memories, the pain, the people? How have the forces on your life changed you, how have you been formed into who you are now? What are the rough edges; the bits ground down and polished, the cracks and the shining crystals? What might be next, what might you become?

[We then arranged our stones together on the ground in the shape of a cross and read the passage]

Reading: 1 Peter 2:4-5

“You are coming to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God’s temple. He was rejected by people, but he was chosen by God for great honor.
And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God.”

End liturgy

In our beginnings and endings be with us Lord.

In our art, our work
and our worship inspire us Lord.
May we dream dreams, and have visions.

May we be a resourceful and innovative community. A light shining in the city bringing others to You.

In our beginnings and endings be with us Lord.
 Amen.

Blessing and dismissal

May the prayers of the Saints surround us,
and may God bless us in that divine creative love that surpasses all understanding.

In the name of the Creative and Creator God,
the Redeemer Word who was also in the beginning, and the Companion who walks with us in life.

Go into the city and live and worship the One
 who created the whole earth,
and when it was done saw that it was good.

May your lives and worship
show love for His creation,
in the name of Christ.

In the name of the Creator, and of the Redeemer,
and of the Companion. Amen.
